Following on from the recent release of the new LAN78XX driver, the SMSC95XX driver which supports previous Raspberry Pi models including B/B+/2B/3B has also been updated to implement some of the improvements noted for the LAN78XX driver.
This includes the new buffered receive and transmit model as well as link status detection plus a rework of the device initialization process to make both drivers similar in their design. Tests show that in many use cases the updated SMSC95XX driver can provide 50% or more improvement in network throughput by reducing the number of data copies required for each receive and transmit.
